I Wanna Shoot Myself in the Face!

Just a short update today. Lately I’ve been super frustrated by this new brand of paper. I’m not sure if you can see it in the picture, but the panel markings are in really weird positions making it quite difficult to measure the gutters on my comics, and it’s slightly “less white” so I have to adjust my levels in Photoshop a little differently…I feel kinda bad about having 50 sheets of this mess since my Wife (you may know her from the comics) went out of her way to pick it up for me, but she got the wrong brand, and my endless whining about it seems to be grating on her.

I’m gonna be pushing myself pretty hard into next week to get my comic buffer rebuilt and keep this thing at 5 days a week. This paper…I can’t EVEN!

A note to anyone interested in pre-ruled Japanese manga paper (I know SO many of you are) just buy Deleter, even if it’s more expensive. No one should have to experience this kind of pain.

    oh no… you’re starting to use ’super’ to describe things… the Japanese is leaking into your brain x.x;

    this might seem like a stupid question… but what’s wrong with getting plain white paper and ‘ruling’ (if that’s not a real word, it should be) it yourself?

    hehe, well glad you two had fun in Tokyo, maybe it seemed smaller just because you already had a sort of mental map from your first visit, so you had some idea of the boundries on it this visit… whereas the first visit every new corner was new ^^?

  2. Yeah, maybe on the Tokyo size thing. I think I’ve just been in Sendai long enough that tall buildings don’t look so tall, and the narrow alleys don’t seem so confusing and expansive, like I’ve gotten used to the Japanese city layout in general. It definitely did look familiar and less ‘new’ to me this time though.

    About ruling my own paper, it’s a matter of convenience really. It’s an extra few steps to have to measure out everything. Making sure that my gutters between panels are consistent would take two rulers and more time than I care to spend on measuring things. The way I have my Photoshop files set up for the comic is based on the ruled paper also. If it was ever off, even just a little, I could end up having to stretch/shrink a panel to make it fit in Photoshop, and that would also be hassle…and probably pretty ugly.

    What I’d really like to do is get some templates made from acrylic that’s cut to the sizes I use for 3 and 4 panel comics. That way I wouldn’t even have to measure at all, just drop the template on whatever paper, trace the inside borders and go about my business. Maybe I’ll look into getting that done next time I’m in the States…I wouldn’t even begin to know who to talk to in Japan for something like that. Su-pa hassles man…
